How do I know what driver to buy when using LED strip?

Selecting the right driver (PSU) is often the trickiest part of an LED strip set-up. Work through it like this:

  1. Check the watts per metre (wpm) of your strip — this is on the technical spec supplied with it.
  2. Work out how many metres of strip you're using.
  3. Multiply the two together. E.g. 10wpm strip over a 5m run = 5m × 10w = 50w.
  4. Add headroom — a good rule of thumb is 20%. So 50w × 1.2 = 60w. Look for a driver rated 60w or higher.
  5. Decide whether you need a standard (non-dimmable) or dimmable driver, based on how the set-up will be controlled — a conventional switch, or 0–10V / mains / DALI / smart home dimming.
